MCS-150 Biennial Update

FMCSA requires an MCS-150 to keep your USDOT number active.

Updates are now filed through FMCSA's new Motus system.

What is an MCS-150 update?

The MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) is how FMCSA keeps your company record current. Every carrier with a USDOT number must refresh it at least every two years, even if nothing has changed.

You also file one whenever your business details change, such as your address, ownership, fleet size or the kind of work you do. Filings now go through FMCSA's Motus system.

MCS-150 filing options

Deactivate your USDOT number

Closed your business or stopped operating? File an out-of-business MCS-150 so FMCSA deactivates the number.

Reactivate your USDOT number

If your number went inactive and you're ready to operate again, an MCS-150 reactivation restores it.

Update your business information

New address, phone, fleet size or type of operation? Report it with an MCS-150 update.

When to file an MCS-150 with Motus

FMCSA requires every motor carrier to file a biennial update to keep an active USDOT number. You also need to file any time your company information or operating status changes.

File an MCS-150 if you need to:

  • Complete your biennial (two-year) update
  • Change your business address
  • Change your company name
  • Update your operating authority details
  • Add or remove vehicles from your fleet
  • Start hauling hazardous materials
  • Reactivate your USDOT number
  • Reapply after a new entrant revocation
  • Report that your company is no longer operating
  • Make any other change to your business information

Miss the update and your USDOT number can be deactivated, with civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day (capped at $10,000), and you lose active operating status with FMCSA.
